Concourse Attelage deTradition (CAT) is the premier equestrian event dedicated to encourage the use of original vehicles and the promotion of traditional carriage driving. By showcasing original working antique carriages and well-trained harness horses, this international competition preserves the elegance and heritage of a bygone era. Unlike many other sports, CIAT features a relaxed format that encourages community and opportunities for learning and building relationships.
What is Concourse Attelage deTradition?
The CAT originated in Europe and is governed by the AIAT (Association International d’Attelage de Tradition) and the Carriage Association of America is the representative organization here in the United States. The competition consists of three distinct phases which must be done with the exact same horse, harness, carriage and passenger attire.
The Presentation. The first phase of the competition is where individual turnouts are judged at a standing presentation separately by three AIAT judges. They are judged and scored for five elements including overall impression, condition of the horse, the carriage, the harness and passenger attire.
The Routier (Road Drive). The second phase is a ‘country drive’ of up to 15k utilizing local roads and landscape. An optimum time is set determined by the size of the equine and five PC’s (Performance Challenges) are negotiated along the drive. These PC’s are judged and designed to replicate situations one might encounter on a drive through town or in the country.
The Maniabilete (Cones Course). The final phase sends competitors through a pattern of 20 cone ‘gates’ within an optimum time. A weighted ball is balanced on each cone and the distance between the cones is adjusted according to the width of the carriage. Points are deducted if balls are knocked down and if the time is not met.
This event, however, is more than three phases of competition; it is a time for connection, community and culinary experiences! A typical event takes place over two and a half days and includes multiple meal and social gatherings in a relaxed atmosphere where social graces and hospitality are on display!
